Krept & Konan - Young Kingz [Review]
Krept & Konan, South London's musical duo - have just released their latest project Young Kingz via iTunes, with exciting features - including Giggs, Tinie Tempah & Chip as well as fellow "Play Dirty member" Yungen. Fekky, who has built a crazy following in the scene right now also features. Other noteworthy features include an artist who's also well know for his wordplay - G Frsh.
Young Kingz is well rounded in terms of subject matter as it covers different aspects of life, from the pain to the victories and includes the highly anticipated wordplay that Krept & Konan are renowned for.
Though well rounded, I do believe the release is quite feature heavy - in turn I understand why it consists of 19 tracks but fortunately it doesnt sound like a compilation as each feature compliment the track and you can tell time has been spent on the selection process.
The poetry at the beginning and end delivered with conviction and potent words by George The Poet is also a nice touch & I do believe it definitely adds something to the release. I'm also happy with all the features as they don't seem forced - plus seem to fit each concept well.
In my opinion I believe Krept & Konan have developed massively from when I first heard them, they seem to use punchlines and wordplay a lot more affectively rather than just because they can.
Overall I would give "Young Kingz" 10/10 and recommend it - as it has a wide range of songs about a roller coaster of life experiences that many can relate to and or feel empathy toward; It also has songs I could easily see being "club bangers" and or songs to 'ride to.'

Young Spray - Hard To Kill Vol.2 - Mixtape [Review]
Let's get it straight we live in a day and age led by reality and keeping it real with UK Rappers seemingly adopting this approach but few and far between who live what they spit and of that exceptional few North Star representative Young Spray is at the upper echelon as is exemplified in His latest release Hard To Kill Vol.2.
In an industry which is often chaotic and unorganised Young Spray has stood the test of time and continues to drop music which is always well received by His ever growing fan base which consists of everyone from certified Street guys,Females,Back packers,Other MC's and college/Uni students all who are eager for a new glimpse into the life of Spray which He never fails to document with pin point accuracy often baring His soul to the world without a care for the vulnerability it might leave Him which is one of the reasons He stands out in an industry full of liars and cowards.
Starting off with the Haunting Intro you get a very good Idea what type of mixtape this is as Spray wastes no time spitting flames like
"I caught a case and man pissed I never rid it,Little Dickhead violated now He wish He never did it,chatting shit your gonna wish you never said it,should have never squashed the beef and now I wish I never dead it" before declaring
"Fuck all these New Rappers,Free Giggs"
Spray keeps things moving with the menacing 2nd Round Knock out His remake of Canibuses classic with Spray using the track to remind Rappers who's who and what's what
"So what you got sick hooks,I was on the road with crooks,You were reading books, when I was on the road looking a jux"
Other tracks to check are the equally impressive Money makes me feel so,Screaming,Came Up and His Behind Barz freestyles with Young Spray dropping aggressive tracks laced with street lyricism and just enough emotion to change His listeners mood whilst the cinematic bars makes you feel like your in the passenger seat as he takes you on a ride through the underbelly of London.
There are too way many hard tracks and quotable bars on this mixtape to pick from but personally the extremely menacing Last Man standing
"Touch a button nah, stop talking do me sutton nah"
and the thought provoking intelligence displayed on Behind Barz freestyle Part 3 serve as the best examples of Young Sprays more insightful side with Him exploring some of His struggles and His reality with heartfelt bars like
"Been Rapping for a while and still ain't running out of lyrics,They been acting all the while and now they're running out of gimmicks,
C.I.D still follow me in Honda Civics,Everywhere I go,Girl are asking for my digits,Trying to live legit,I wanna pay Taxes, don't wanna read mail,I Just wanna read Faxes,In Jail that's where all the Blacks is,That's where you can find the truth, that's where all the Facts is"
All said and done the one thing which might take away from the mixtape is arguably the abundance of US Rap beats with spray covering everthing from Rick Ross and French Montana's Stay Scheming down to 50 Cents Wankster but Spray doesn't hide behind any of the beats with many of them being old or obscure hood classics in place of a mixtape with nothing but current smashes which this mixtape isn't,what this mixtape is however is one of the best UK Rap mixtapes this year.
10/10

Review - D Power - Progress CD
D Powers Progress CD is a testiment
to hard work and dedication with D Power constantly developing as an MC and although Diesle is a pioneer of the Grime scene it has really been over the past 3 years that He has really entered the consciousness of the Grime scene as an MC with
the former DJ,Producer and Pirate Radio station founder constantly on stage at all the biggest events along with Grimes elite, not forgetting His now legendary
Clash with Wariko for Lord of the Mics 3 regarded by many to be the highlight
of the DVD which brings us to His latest
release Progress CD.
Progress CD is a 2012 essential for any real Grime fan or lover of UK Street music with attitude with D Power showcasing the
levels he has attained by dropping an album jam packed with some of the hardest
Grime tracks and anthems of this year with D Power 's refined flow and wide
range of subject matter and an equally impressive array of beats look at it this way with tracks like Me not you,Go Nuts,Hands
Up,Horror Show,My Life and Runway its impossible not to rate D Power's ability
to craft Riot erupting Grime anthems with Him holding His own against many of
Grimes hardest rhyme slingers and proving He can make Bangers and introspective thought
provoking tracks without assistance.
All in all D Powers Progress
CD is an essential purchase for any true fan of Gully Road Grime as this is what
D Power does best and while He doesnt break the mold in terms of innovation,He
does prove He's more than certified among Grimes elite.
9/10
"This album is likely to make
you slap your Boss and is one of the best examples of unadulterated and unapologetic
grime released this year with full credit going to D Power for releasing an album
devoid of electro pop attempts or thinly veiled attempts to conquer the UK Rap scene keeing
things 100% Grime nothing more,nothing less." - Lordie @TheGrimeReport

Offender - Film Review [Offender In cinemas 8th August]
I'm going to put this in simple english Offender is easily one of the most gritty UK films I have ever seen and can only be explained as a 2012 version of the Alan Clarke classic Scum with Offender not compromising anything or glorifying any situations instead it is a gritty and realistic tale of Prison in the UK but ultimately a tale of Love,Revenge,Pride and Passion blended with some epic fight scenes and a look into the lives of a few of the Prisoners, how they ended up where they are and how they survive.
The cast Joe Cole,English Frank,G Frsh,Scorcher,Tyson Oba,Mic Righteous are all perfectly selected for the roles they play and this essentially makes the film move fluidly and the script is epic enough and well directed and filmed in a way which will keep the attention of the viewer throughout without loosing pace or focus whilst staying away from the typical clichés that have spoilt many of the other UK Films released recently.
Essentially Offender is a tale of Love and Revenge and this is what makes this film special and something both males and females from anywalk of life will be able to take something from as it covers many of the recent social and economic problems which affect us all in the UK,such as the recent UK Riots,Effects of the Recession,Corruption and Mental Health in their raw glory which is something many UK Films need to start doing more of.
Without being disrespectful to anyone Offender ranks head and shoulders above Kiddult Hood,Victim,Ill Manors,Rolling with the 9's and makes many of its predecessors look like after school specials as this is a more of a complete film and the one we will look back on in the future and say this is exactly how it was in 2011/2012
also the soundtrack and backdrops to this film are matched to perfection with a combination of Grime,Dubstep,Rap and oldschool classics working well as a sound bed to many of the most Epic scenes in this film making it something Director Ron Scalpello should receive many Accolades and Awards for.
Offender is one of the few modern day UK classic's.

Rival - Party Rings [Review]
Rival is currently
one of the most consistent Grime artists in the scene right now; hailing from
east London - he’s dropped about ten releases since arriving
in the scene in 2010 with fellow Grime MC Marger.
As one of the
Grime scenes ‘new wave artists‘, Rival was involved in the most recent instalment of
the legendary Lord of the Mic’s where he faced the
well seasoned OG;z member Desperado.
‘Party Rings’
is an 11 track free download consisting of 5 features including fellow Lord of
the Mic’s 3 representative and former Fire Camp
member Clipson, Grime veteran Sharky Major, Doller Da Dustman and a few others.
All of the songs on the EP are original apart from the ‘I’m On One Freestyle.’
Late 2011 Rival
dropped ‘Lord Rivz’
of which can be downloaded on iTunes - it was well received and had some of the
Grime MC’s best work including ‘Just A Dream’
featuring Dot Rotten, ‘Save Me’ featuring Ghetts and ‘Plan
A’ featuring Lioness. ‘Lord Rivz’
contained a healthy spread of established artists featured on it, expanding the
east London artist’s fan base rapidly.
‘Party Rings’
begins with a song called ‘Charlie Sheen’ where Rival talks about the music scene at the
present and his ‘winning’
mind state. The second track is a Grime banger produced by G Tank and featuring
Clipson where both ‘spitter’
dismantle the track with heavyweight lyricism and flows.
The EP is very
well rounded - with a mix of UK Hiphop tracks as well as Grime and Dubstep
songs also. To add to that ’Party Rings’ is also well balanced with both hype/up tempo songs
and more mellow/chill out music to appeal to all types of moods.
Rival displays his
versatility and musical abilities as he sings and or raps most of the choruses
on his EP and changes up his flows and style for each individual track.
Tracks to look out
for are as follows:
Grime Killers
Feat. Clipson
Light Work
Music Is My Life
Different Breed
Feat. Sharky Major
Enemies
Make Sure You’re Ready Feat. Doller Da Dustman
When Will This All
End
Overall the only
negative criticism I can remotely think of after listening to this release 3 or
4 times already - is that Rival doesn’t
seem to change his tone of voice or the way he says words within verses enough,
which isn’t really a major issue and one He will develop on with time,Other than that Rival once again shows why He is a Leader of the New School.

Squeeks – Call Me Squeeko [Review]
Fresh off his OMA
‘Best Newcomer 2011’ nomination, Squeeks has dropped his highly anticipated
third mixtape. The CMG affiliate was quickly becoming an established name in
the UK ’s
urban scene in 2011 – with his unique voice, strong lyricism and style.
Prior to the release
of ‘Call Me Squeeko,’ Squeeks dropped a ‘Daily Duppy’ for Grime Daily just
before the release, a ‘Behind Barz’ for Link up TV in January as a reminder of
what he’s capable of. Squeeks also made an appearance in a Tim Westwood ‘Crib
Session’, which one of the veterans in the UK scene and leader of CMG Joe
Black in and around the time ‘Call Me Squeeko’ dropped.
The mixtape begins
with ‘riding in my car’ where Squeeks illustrates the life he lives with piercing
lyricism and a range of flows - definitely likely to be a hood anthem in the
near future.
The second track the North
London artist grenades isn’t an original song but is deservedly reloaded 32
bars into the track which in itself indicates what he did to the track.
Listening to the
mixtape, there is a strong vibe through out - that comes with the instrumental
choices and Squeeks’ flows. ‘Call me Squeeko’ is definitely a CD to vive to, no
matter the mood you are in due to the vast selection of styles he drops on it.
In my eyes, he does attempt to appeal to both his male and female audiences –
making the release well rounded.
If I were to be
meticulous in finding anything that I did not like while I was listening to the
CD, I would definitely have to be the way in which used the same flow and style
as the artist that did the original song on the track he entitled ‘Big
Squeeko.’
Islington’s Squeeks
did this CD with a few samples and no features, considering that it’s 14 tracks
long, that is definitely impressive and shows he’s definitely a strong lyricist
with a lot of innovative ideas.
Tracks to look out for
are as follows:
Riding In My Car
Impossible
Changes
I Got You
My Scream
F.A.M.E
To conclude, ‘Call Me
Squeeko’ is definitely one of my favourite mixtapes to come out this year. It
is that because of the aura I feel while listening and the variety of songs it
contains.

Butterz & Hardrive - 2nd Birthday Party at Cable - Sat 24th March 2012 [Review]
What do you get when you mix Beautiful women, some of the best underground Music and a well catered venue? A Saturday night to remember and Butterz and Hardrive 2nd Birthday party is a night everyone that attened will not forget in a hurry.
The line up on the flier was enough to let you know it was going to be a night of nothing but the best in underground music with Grime,Funky House,Garage all on the menu with an emphasis on the instrumentals and less on the MC's which is sometimes a problem but in this case couldn't have worked better with the few MC's selected definitely understanding what was needed of them.
Events were set of with firing sets by D.O.K,P Jam (who was accompanied by Big Narstie) and DJ Swindle with all DJ's playing sets covering some of the best tracks around and a few classics with the occasional V.I.P version tearing the club down.
After some very energetic sets and the club filling up with some very beautiful females and Guys out to party one of the headliners Terror Danjah took to the Decks with Bruza and Riko and all mayhem was let loose with Terror Danjah definitely showcasing his expertise with a beat selection jampacked with bangers and a few surprise mixes and dubplates with Bruza and Riko fully complementing his set perfectly especially when classics like Wiley's 'Eskimo' and Dizzee Rascals 'Hoe' were played.
Elijah and Skillam took to the Decks with a surprise guest dressed in a onesie zipped to the top which when opened revealed JME who vibesd along to the classics and new school bangers Elijah and Skilliam dropped before the Boy Better Know member climbed onto the Decks and performed a tirade of hits and fan favourites including 'JME','AWOH','Serious' and many more before walking into the crowd to perform 96 Fuckeries whilst being mobbed, hugged, posing for pics and partying with the crowd which was definitely a shutdown moment and one of the hardest performances I have seen from a Grime MC in a while.
After Elijah and Skilliam had blown out the candles on their cake Kiss 100 Fm took to the Mic and MC'd on stage and whilst he didn't drop any bars he did a good Job of hyping the crowd.
Marcus Nasty played a straight firing Funky House and Minimal set with nothing but the latest tracks with the crowd going nuts at each track he dropped with him more or less taking them on another Bass filled journey.
Spooky Bizzle was next up and kept the early morning revellers skanking out to some of the hardest Grime instrumentals mixed with classics till the early morning which the crowd definitely weren't bothered by.
Butters and Hard drive is going to be a hard night to beat as the vibe, beautiful Ladies and Music will be a hard task to replicate,If you weren't at Cable on Saturday you really missed out.

Review - No Lay – Rebellion EP (by Tevyn J
No Lay is back with her first release of 2012! The Grime veteran was part of the collective Unorthodox when she first burst onto the scene – ‘No Help or Handouts’ being the Grime collectives most well known track.
The South London MC flooded the urban industry with music last year as she delivered four or five releases, completely destroyed Birmingham's OG Nicky and featured on a couple tracks including ‘Goonz’ by Marger.
The 2012 OMA nominee seems to be starting this year the same way she ended 2011, already releasing ‘Rebellion and appearing in a few visuals including English Frank’s Southside Connection
Prior to the EP, No Lay AKA Isabella Gotti dropped a ‘Fire in the Booth’ for Radio 1Xtra DJ Charlie Sloth, a ‘Behind Bars’ for Link Up TV, a ‘Spotlight’ freestyle for Street Starz TV and a ‘Daily Duppy’ for Grime Daily.’ No Lay’s ‘Behind Bars’ really stuck out to me - giving me goose bumps as she let us into her life a little more – giving us a little insight into her life and her thoughts on music while ripping through the instrumental with her
Rebellion is a twelve track EP with six songs and six bonus tracks, which include the very impressive ‘Behind Bars’ freestyle I mentioned earlier. There’s even a Drum & Bass remix of Drugs on the EP for a different feel of the song which was included on her ‘He Said She Said’ EP which was released on iTunes last year. The isn’t one feature on any of the tracks included in the EP showing that No Lay has a lot to say and lyrically capable of holding her own, however, I do believe if there were one or two features – they would compliment one or two of the songs rather then taking away anything. In my opinion, No Lay adding her singing vocals here and there definitely added a different element of the Grime artist into the mix.
The EP begins with ‘Blowing Out Ya Home’ which sets the tone for the rest of the CD - with mad wordplay and No Lays infamous flows and delivery - that grabbed my attention from the get go. ‘Rebellion’ is an example of No Lay at her rawest, with flows and unforgiving lyrics. From start to finish, she does not let up, no gimmicks, no poppy sing-along type songs and refreshing honesty.
Stand out tracks include:
‘Behind Bars Link Up TV - Unfinished Sympathy’
‘Blowing Out Ya Home’
‘Oh Yeah’
‘Isabella Gotti Got It!’
‘Make It’
‘Goodbye’

Eskimo Dance 2012 - Review & Pictures
So Eskimodance 2012 ...
It's been God knows how long since the last one and to be honest it feels like it was that long ago in sense of how far our scene has grown.
Before landing at 'Proud' (more on this later), I watched the original 'Lord of the mics' around my mates in Streatham. We watched it for two reasons really, firstly I wanted to see the difference in production, MC'ing, set up compared to the latest one, and secondary I'd lent it to my mate in 2005 and he was finally giving it me back..
It was just crazy to think that LOTM was so groundbreaking for the Grime scene all them years, and now Eskimodance was back at London's largest club at the 02. A hell of a lot has happened to our mcs since then, in terms of commerical success and mainstream recognition.
Eskimodance 2012 felt like.a return to those orginal LOTM roots, It had to be success, it had to go smoothly for the sake of grimes progression and continued acceptance...
I'd been looking at twitter all day and a lot of the talk was a mix of people being absolutely mad for it, and people worrying whether it was gonna get locked down or go off inside.
I didn't know what to expect to be honest, London raves are COMPLETELY different to the Birmingham raves I'm used to in terms of atmosphere and crowd. The best case scenario- everyone turns up for the sake of the music. Worst case?- the place is full of kids who wana kick off...
Arriving at the 02 again showed me how far the grime scence has come, that place is huge. Horrible confession here, but I've been before, and saw the SPICE GIRLS there....ok, probably shouldn't have admitted that but it kept the missus at the time happy.....
Proud itself is a quality quality venue. Perfect for a rave, massive stage, massive dancefloor, huge bar with tons of people serving, drinks weren't overpriced and a heated smoking area. It suited the night, instead of your standard dance venue which feels moody, the choice of venue showed again the scene has progressed.
I landed just before Logan Sama came on. Man comes on in a SUIT with a new trim, looking like Chris Jericho from the WWE and as per standard absolutely smashed. I tweeted this after his set, but I really don't honestly believe there is a better in their genre than him.
Sama had the crowd in the plam of his hand, with a mix of classics and the latest tracks, some of the drops got that many reloads I completely lost count and the crowd ate it up. For me, the biggest drops were 'I'm Doin It Again' purely cos the whole crowd did Wiley's bars and as expected, 'Next Hype' sent the place mental..
After Sama finished and Sir Sypro came on, I looked around at the crowd and again saw what a diverse crowd we have in grime. A mix of young heads, older lads, girls, students and kids who barely looked old enough to get served for fags let alone get into a club, were all giving it loads on the dancefloor.
Now for me, this was the biggest success of the night. It shows not only how many different people listen to grime but also that people are just there to come out, rave and enjoy grime music as a whole.
Would this have happened at grime nights in say, 04, 05? Seriously doubt it.
By this point if I'm being completely honest, I was half cut so I'm not even gonna try and go into detail about which MC did what bars. If I could remember this, I obviously would have had my bb in my hand all night and looked like one of those people who goes out with their mates, doesn't speak to them, and just stands there updating facebook...plus, you spend more than 15mins doing anything on a bb and the battery dies.....
Ghetts smashed it, O'Gs smashed it, BBk tore the place apart Chronik made Jammer Stagedive . I have never seen so many MC's on on one stage in my life. It was refreshing to see legends in grime such as Boy Better Know going back to back with the up and coming MCs, check the videos that were blogged earlier, it was absolute chaos, every MC was hungry for the mic to be passed. Big highlight for me was Trilla's '0121' drop, didn't see that coming...
We left after that set finished. What was the point in staying, nothing was gonna top this year, let alone that night. Put the UK Funky on and be done with it..
On the bus home, a lot of chat was about Wiley's bars, or lack of them. I think I saw him do, what a 16? But what do you expect from him, this is the same guy I saw mc in sydney and do half his set SITTING DOWN because there was hardly anyone there! I guess this is why we love the bloke, he's completely unpredictable.
Interestingly,a lad my mate knew was talking about this was his first Grime night and he didn't know what to expect. He said he'd been listened to logan on kiss etc for ages but never managed to catch a night. Main thing he said about it? That he couldn't understand what some of the mc's were saying...
And you know what, its not that bad of a point. Your experienced heads, the Jmes, Skeptas, P moneys, all spat with near perfect delivery and clearness. Could the same be said for some of our newer generation?
If nights such as eskimodance are going to continue, and more importantly get bigger and even better, we need to make sure the 'casual' Grime fan is converted. Would you check for an mc after if you didn't have a clue what they were spitting?....
Eskimodance 2012 will go down as a massive massive success for many reasons. The DJ sets were brilliant, every MC turned up and smashed it and the crowd- atmosphere was absolutely amazing.
Worst moment? Some annoying Bird behind us on the bus home moaning that Wiley was awful and that she had no idea where the bus was going. I think even the lad who had blatantly picked her up at the rave had lost all hope in closing her once we got to Elephant and Castle...
But when some s*ags moaning is the worst bit of your night, you know its a been a good one...

LORD OF THE MICS 3 - REVIEW
The Grime Event of the year Lord of the Mics 3 see's its release on DVD tomorrow and here's a brief rundown of a few of the battles which I saw at the Private screening this week.
Marger v.s Lay.Z
Of all the clashes on Lord of the Mics 3 Marger vs Lay.Z is definitely the most controversial as anyone who is on Twitter will know with Lay.Z receiving a lot more than he bargained for in the Basement.
Kozzie v.s Sox
Birmingham's Sox definitely lets himself as well as his City down with his less than stellar performance which see's him constantly forgetting his Bars and thats after he forfited the first battle.
Diesle v.s Wariko
This is one of the most well laid out Clashes with each veteran studying their opponent and really letting loose lyrically really showing how a Clash should be handled.
Tre Mission v.s Jendor
Canada's Tre Mission actually manged to hold his own against the OGz member Jendor who really put it on Tre Mission taking no Prisoners with his bars and technical ability.
Verdict
Lord of the Mics 1 & 2 are legendary DVD's and responsible for boosting the careers of all artists involved and while LOTM3 will definitely boost the careers of all involved it does lack that certain Star power of previous editions as many of today's Grime 'Top Boys' refused to clash for fear of losing as well as many of them seeing themselves too Big to be involved in clashing.
There were also MC's like Chronik who nobody in the Grime scene was brave enough to clash as well as the No Lay vs OG Niki situation, but this surprisingly doesn't take away from the DVD as the New generation of Grime MC's definitely keep things popping with what is a very entertaining set of Clashes that have kept Grime relevant in 2011.
9/10
I can honestly call this one of the Best things I have seen this year.

Rival - Lord Rivz - Review
Of all of Grimes last wave of new wave MC's Rival is if not the most consistent then certainly the most thorough and with a now extensive catalogue of Mixtapes and EP's as well as some Epic Grime sets and Freestyles the time has come for Rival to really mark his territory and enforce it which is exactly what he does with his latest EP Lord Rivz.
Starting with Intro Rival really shows he is determined to be defined as great with him dropping some serious Bars over the menacingly dark instrumental Rival dazzles with lines like
("Its a par for them everybody thinks they're Ali, till I make em shake like Ali,Yeah the Blake is Parkinsons,Rivs you can't war with him, homicide writer I'm marking men")
Rival proves on this track that unlike many artists whom recycle their lyrics he is a writer and a very talented one at that as is exemplified on tracks like Just a dream,Talk that and Rivals Rush which serves as a lesson in Grime with Rival dropping Bars in a serious double timed flow but with a clarity which is rare with lines like ("Internet saying that I'm top 3 so I need top 3 money to prove that, but really I'm not Top 3 I'm just relevant but I can bare Mcs that I'm better than, most are happy with a spot on Logan,me I'm trying to go further than a few veterans")
Lord Rivz has a few well placed guest spots with Ghetts,Sharky Major,Young Kye and Lioness all trading bars with Rival and its the collaboration with Lioness and Logan Sama that is probably one of the best tracks on the mixtape with the two mcs planning and carrying out a heist with Logan Sama narating their movements all in all this concept track shows Rival can hold his own against Grimes leading lady but also craft tracks which are pretty much audio cinematography and serve as an example of Grime at its finest.
Lord Rivz is Balanced and in all honesty is a contender for Grime EP of the year although at 10 tracks it runs a bit short he's given up 10 of the best with no desperate attempts at day time radio play and also not deciding to show his versatility by rapping as Rival shows with Lord Rivz that he is more than capable of Keeping it Grime and Keeping it Banging with the end result a mixtape that deserves a place in every Grime fans collection!
