REVIEW:MERCSTON - VENTILATION E.P
Mercston is one of the most underrated MC's in the Grime scene and that's something Ventilation proves once again,While many of the MCs from the golden age of Grime have turned into pop stars and many have forgone their credibility in an aim to cash in Mercston manages to craft tracks with commercial appeal as well as street credibility zigging in and out of musical lanes from Hardcore Grime tracks such as 'Training' featuring Maxta,Big Shiz and Opium and 'Money Man' to smoothed out Hip Hop inspired tracks like the infectious 'Reason' featuring Benny Bizzle and the futuristic Ragga/Hip Hop and R&B Fusion 'Watch' featuring Jaze Aliga which work absolutely perfect and show the levels Mercston brings to the game.
Other tracks to look out for are the excellent 'Leaving' featuring E.Entsir where over an slick Hip Hop beat Mercston details a relationship breakdown spitting bars like ("It appears clear that you left, the yard is a mess, but your leaving a letter, should have sent a text,I raced up the steps looked to the west, the wardrobe was open not even a dress not even a vest, wait back to the mess, holes in my clothes, shit now I'm vexed, the Louie V pair cost an arm and a leg, still I picture you here in my arms in my chest")
Mercston wins on Ventilation by showing no fear to his vunerabilties and really going in on tracks which is clear in his lyrics, choice of guests as well as his beat selection,The best example of this is title track 'Ventilation' where over a piano driven instrumental he spits ("My minds running wild,is it real what I'm feeling, all that glitters isn't gold so looks can be decieving, thank God that I'm alive, maybe one day I'll meet him,I try to move rightious but I have to bring the P in,and as for that case damn right I'm still appealing any one that believed it,Must be a fucking idiot") and also has one of the most inspirational choruses this year with Mercston joined almost perfectly by a female backing singer ("I feel like they want to take me away,I see it through my third eye,That's why I'm on my own like everyday, watching time pass by,they say that I will never make it, and that I'm only time wasting, will I ever get nominated, and get the support to go and take it")
While this is not a straight Grime or Hip Hop and much more musical than a lot of what's out at the moment It is definitely an Ep for anyone who simply knows and enjoys good Music regardless of the Genre.
Ventilation shows the growth of Mercston as a musician and to be completely honest Mercston should be on his way to bigger things with this one
8/10
